Words to Know is a vocabulary program aimed at grades four through eight. This product consists of 10 units. Each unit should be taught for 3 weeks. This will allow you to still use all of the content you purchased while allowing you to take time off as needed, such as during state test prep, state testing itself, during short weeks interrupted by holidays or other events, and during special projects, such as novel projects or extended writing projects.
Each unit, students will use various skills as they learn vocabulary. Students will use words in context, identify examples, and discover word origins. They will also work with parts of speech, prefixes, roots, suffixes, synonyms, and antonyms.
Visual learners will enjoy the video word list that is available, as well as the QR code image activities. Below is a brief overview of what is available in the program.
General Materials for use with all Units:

After purchase, you will download a zipped file that includes several parts: 1 teacher information PDF with a label to read first. This will include the link to the product website, descriptions of activities, suggested order of activities, and Word Card Activity direction cards. Also, each unit has a separate file folder with teacher resources PDF (answer keys, assessments, word cards for each unit), student activity book PDF, PowerPoint Presentation, and Smart Notebook presentation. There is also a file labeled Entire Printable PDF for Words to Know-Student and Teacher Resources. This file includes all of the pages from the individual unit files and the Teacher Information File. If you prefer to have the entire product in one file, you may wish to look at this version instead. However, you will still need to visit each unit's individual folder if you wish to use the PowerPoint or SMART Notebook files for each unit.
A note about technology:
You do not have to use the digital activities to use this program. They are optional. Also, note that you do not have to be able to use a QR code scanner to use the QR code activities. The images are also available in the presentation file of your choice. Note that neither I nor TPT are in control of the external resources Kahoot or Quizlet. If you have issues with the product website, please leave me a question. Finally, you must have a Google account to use the Google Slides or Google forms activities.
Suggested Use: (Included in Teacher Information File)
Plan on spending 15- 30 minutes on vocabulary per day. Below is a suggested timeline. However, you know your students and your personal style best. Use the components that work best for you. Determine which components you want to include in the student activity packet, keeping in mind you can use the Word Study graphic organizer for multiple words. Before beginning a unit, you will need to put together the student activity book, determine which activities you want to use for small groups, centers, or stations, and choose the type of assessment you want to use. You have multiple assessment options: 2 versions of the printable writing assessment, online Google Forms, or printing the Google Forms quiz.
Week 1: On Monday, introduce the vocabulary word list, using the video if possible. Note that there is an image and an additional fact on the word list. So, review the word list for this piece of information even if using the video. Complete Activity A. On Tuesday, complete activity B. On Wednesday, complete a Word Study page and/or allow students time to use the Quizlet study set. On Thursday, complete activity C. On Friday, complete activity D.
Week 2: On Monday, allow students time to use the Quizlet study set and/or complete a Word Study page. On Tuesday, complete activity E. On Wednesday, complete the A Closer Look activity. On Thursday and Friday, allow students to work in small groups or centers. Incorporate one or two centers into any group work time you already have planned. Or, consider having 3 to 5 stations for only vocabulary practice. Utilize the Image Investigations, Quizlet, and/or 2-3 word card activities. Allow students to complete some of the center or station activities and save some for next week. Or allow students to complete all stations, but save some activities for next week. For example, only include one image investigation activity this week and save the second for next week.
Week 3: On Monday, complete a Word Study page and/or allow students time to use the Quizlet study set. Tuesday and Wednesday can be used for students to complete any centers or stations needed. On Thursday, play the Kahoot or Quizlet Live game, if desired, and then allow students to work on the written assessment for an extended time on Thursday and Friday.
***If asking students to complete all three prompts, you may wish to provide students time to work across the majority of week 3. If using the Google Forms quiz instead of the Writing Assessment, you may wish to extend your center time or play a Kahoot on one day and a Quizlet Live game on another day and give students time during one class period for the Google Forms quiz. Also note that you can print the Google Forms quiz if you prefer a written quiz but do not wish for students to take the Writing Assessment provided.***
A note about QR Codes: The Image Investigation activities include QR codes. Any QR code app will be able to read these codes. These apps are generally free in your device’s app store. Students who are allowed to use devices in class should be encouraged to download a free app. There are also browser extensions that use a laptop’s or desktop’s camera as a scanner. Please try out a few. Though they work similarly, you may find you prefer one over another. For example, some will take you directly to the image while others may bring up a link you have to click to go to the picture.
A note about the Word Study graphic organizer: This page can be printed and used for multiple words. In addition to the suggested uses above, you may wish to assign some words as homework and include extra pages in the student activity book. Or, you may wish to keep extra copies available for early finishers to use as a way to practice during any spare time.
