The following is a student-centered worksheet /activity where students are required to work like a historian. First, students learn about primary sources, secondary sources, and the historical record though a reading and several critical thinking questions. Then, students are placed in small groups and begin a gallery walk. Images of the contents of a historical figure’s pockets (Abraham Lincoln) should be placed around the room (contained in a PowerPoint included with this worksheet). Students will attempt to learn about this anonymous person simply through an analysis of artifacts. At the end of the lesson, the identity of the figure is revealed. This activity promotes active engagement, teamwork, and critical thinking.
This lesson is perfect for any social studies classroom - Global/World/US History or APUSH.
