In this bundle you will receive 13 work stations with progressions for K-3. Progressions lead students to work through literacy activities that lead to time in connected texts.
With each station you will receive Teacher Directions that include materials needed, differentiation ideas, and tips for implementing the workstation. Included with each station is also the poster with each step for the student to follow, worksheets, recording papers, and work mats if appropriate.
Work Stations included:
Listening Work Station A, B, & C: A has students sequence beginning, middle, and end of a literary text. B has students find words in the text that follow a phonics rule for the week identified by teacher, write sentences using those words, and retell characters, setting, and events. C has students find vocabulary words for the week, use the words in sentences, and tell main idea and details.
High Frequency Word Work Work Stations: Teacher provides high frequency words to practice, student says word, builds word with manipulative, writes the word, uses the words in a sentence, and reads the words in a text. Depending on grade level or student need certain steps of this workstation can be removed. Differentiated posters are provided.
Primary Word Work Work Station: This station requires students to sort listed words based on spelling pattern/phonics rule, read a text with those words, circle the words in the text (students can place a sheet protector over pages of book to circle words if using books instead of paper), write words from text in a circle map based spelling/phonics patterns.
Text Detective: Students read a text, answer posted questions about text in a journal, summarize the text, and create higher level questions for the text with provided question stems.
Vocabulary Work Station: Match words, pictures, and definitions in a pocket chart with a partner, read a text with a partner containing the vocabulary words, write new sentences using the vocabulary words in a journal, repeat steps for older vocabulary words if time permits. I have created word, picture, definition cards for 2nd and 3rd grade Wonders and have shared them on Facebook in the Second Grade Reading Wonders and Third Grade Reading Wonders groups.
Writing Work Station A, B, & C: A has students choose an assigned number of vocabulary words from the word wall, write several seven up sentence using the words, include adjectives in sentences, check work with a rubric, edit/revise sentences based on rubric. B has students do all the steps mentioned in A, but provides reminders about capitals, finger spaces, and punctuation on the workstation poster. C requires students to complete the above mentioned steps, but instead of just sentences, students write a narrative or essay with the vocabulary words. Progression posters, Seven-Up Sentence poster, Adjective Word Bank, Super Sentence Checklist, and Writing Rubric are provided.
Fluency Work Station A & B: A requires students to take turns with a partner to read words and phrases that build to a story, take turns with a partner to read the whole story, and answer questions about the text. An example is provided. B has students take turns with a partner, read a text for one minute, track number of words read correctly, number of words read incorrectly, repeat for a total of 3 reads, and evaluate themselves on an Accuracy, Expression, Rate, Phrasing rubric.
Phonics Work Station: Requires students to say letter names and sounds that are posted, use sensory items to practice forming letters and repeat sounds, sort pictures by letter sounds, use sounds to label pictures, read a text with assigned letter sounds.
Partner Reading Work Stations A & B: A is used for non-fiction texts and requires students to take turns re-reading a text to their partner, filling out a tree map about the text, and retelling the text to their partner. B is used for fiction texts and requires students to re-read a story with their partner, fill out a flow map, and retell the story to their partner. Tree Map and Flow Map provided.
Word Work Intermediate Work Station A & B: A has students break posted words into syllables, say syllables to a partner, find those words in a text, read connected text with a partners. Syllable sorting mat provided. B requires students to break posted words into prefix, root, suffix, say parts to a partner, find words in a text, read connected text with a partner. Prefix, Root, Suffix mat provided.
Word Why Work Station: Students partner read a story/text with vocabulary words, read sentences from the text with assigned vocabulary words, answer questions about the vocabulary words, explain how they know they are right. Example text, and differentiated questions about vocabulary words are provided.
Segmenting Work Station: Has students practice their phonemic awareness skill of segmenting sounds in words and identifying beginning, middle, and end sounds.
Roll and Read: Students practice reading and spelling words that connect to high frequency, vocabulary, spelling patterns taught in whole group time. Station can be differentiated based on students' needs. Student may read words and a connected text, read words, a connected text and use words in sentences they create, or read sentences with focus words, read a connected text, and write their own sentence with target words.
