The book is a Level 1 Scholastic Science Reader. Close reading of informational texts is an important component of the Common Core. This fun workbook is designed to work on that skill.
The unit is planned to take 6 days. Each two pages of the workbook covers one day, about 4-5 pages of the reader. For each day there are informational questions and skills questions. The informational questions include using the glossary, true/false, identifying the topic, getting information from illustrations, looking for detail, identifying reasons. Skills exercises include silent E, counting syllables, blending initial consonants, distinguishing sentences and words, rhyming words, compound words.
“Sharks” by Guibertson is available from Scholastic. There are several shark books in the catalog, so be sure to search for this author. The reading level is listed as 1.9. This workbook was designed for mid-year of first grade, but can be used with strong Ks and will appeal to second graders as well.
