Often emerging readers just don’t have the vocabulary to read dense or technical text. Each day’s activity begins with word study: looking at meaning and pronunciation of new words, examining stems+affixes, creating compound words, counting syllables, guessing meanings, and spelling. The exercises give the students an opportunity to work directly with the vocabulary, and they give the teacher a chance to teach unfamiliar words as needed.
The day’s activity ends with reading exercises which give strategies for getting content from the text using headings, highlighted words, illustrations, etc.). The final exercise in each section is close reading of the text to organize the information in a graphic format.
The last exercise is for students to consolidate the information about symbiotic relationships and think of an example of a human+animal relationship to write about. They are directed to write using the same format as the text (title, highlighted words).
In my classroom, I have several reading groups working on different books. Each group meets with me, and we look at the workbook pages and talk about how we could answer them. Then they go off to work on the answers with partners or with their group. This independent work gives me time to work with the next group.
I have been a K/1st teacher for several years. Now I am the reading specialist for K-3 at my school. If you like my materials, please check back at my store as I will be adding more 2nd/3rd informational reading workbooks.
