Starfish: This workbook is designed to accompany the Common Core exemplar text for 1st grade informational texts [Starfish by Edith Thatcher Hurd]. The workbook was designed with 1st graders in mind, but can easily be used by high kindergarteners at the end of the year, or early 2nds.
The workbook includes a variety of exercises to develop literacy skills for reading informational texts as outlined in the CCSC. The workbook also includes foundational skills, including phonics, silent E, consonant blends, rhymes, and counting syllables. Check the standards listed for a complete overview of the CCSC items covered.
Questions provide the opportunity for students to practice different answer formats: short answer, complete sentences, choose the correct answer, true false,, cut-and-glue, and sorting.
This workbook packet also covers writing non-fiction/informational texts at a grade-appropriate level, with a template for students to write their own book about starfish. The writing skill exercises leading up to this include punctuation, capitalization, and adding details.
(NOTE: TPT limits how many CCSS can be tagged below. I couldn't tag all the Foundational Skills covered in this workbook for kindergarten, first and second grades)
