Workbook to accompany *Mr. Putter and Tabby Pour the Tea* by Cynthia Rylant
I love using easy chapter books to hook my students on extensive, independent reading. This workbook is designed to be used over a 7-day span as students read the book. It covers many of the Common Core standards for 1st grade, and can be used for high kindergarteners or early 2nd graders.
A variety of questions and easy format make this workbook interesting and fun:
Types of activities
*Write the answer
*Fill in the blank or the chart
*Cut and glue
*Coloring a picture and writing dialog for characters
*Identify characters and setting for each chapter
*Recall details from the text
*Get details from illustrations
*Organize details with charts
*Compare characters with a venn diagram
*Spelling of +ed and +er affixes
*Sounds of +ed and +s affixes
This workbook can be used for whole group or small group instruction. Typically in my own classroom, I have reading groups working on different books at the same time. Depending on the reading level of a particular group of students and their independence, I might have them read some pages for homework, and then we will do the workbook in class. Or, I might have them come to the circle, and we take turns reading the text out loud before doing the workbook.
We discuss the two workbook pages together answer some of the questions. Then I send them back to their desks to finish writing the answers, coloring, writing dialog, and perhaps doing a cut & glue. At that time, I can work with another group. With this system, I can get through 4 reading groups each day.
