Product Description
Workbook for Lighthouse Family: The Storm

This workbook is designed to accompany The Storm, which is the first book in the Lighthouse Family series by Cynthia Rylant. It is a Common Core exemplar text for second and third grades, with interesting new words and thoughtful writing.

The Common Core standards emphasize the importance of getting students to be able to read challenging texts by teaching them vocabulary and word analysis skills, and by requiring close reading of the text to develop comprehension. This workbook provides pre-reading activities which give the students enough scaffolding to read the text independently. The post-reading activities guide the students’ comprehension of the text. The writing activities ask the students to produce paragraphs for different purposes, consolidating the information and personalizing it.

I teach a combined 2nd/3rd class. The target student audience for this workbook is early 3rd grade, but it fits for high 2nd as well as 4th. The variety of exercises in each chapter will keep the students interested. The workbook can be use for whole-class instruction, or small-group work. In my own class, I have several reading groups, each working on a different book. I meet with each group for reading instruction, and we look at the workbook together. Then they go off to do the work independently from me while I work with another group.
