This workbook accompanies the book *Sadako and the Thousand Cranes* by Eleanor Coerr. Although the book can be read quickly, this workbook requires intensive study of the text. The Common Core Standards listed here on TPT are for 4th grade, but the workbook has been used effectively in a 4th/5th combination classroom.
Each chapter includes a *writing assignment* which asks students to use evidence from the text to support the topic of their paragraphs. For example, this is the writing prompt for Ch. 6:
Write a paragraph for Nurse Yasunaga. Imagine she meets a new friend who asks her, “What kind of work do you do?” The topic sentence is given for you. Add details from the text, and don’t forget a concluding sentence.
"I have a very difficult job, but I try my best to help my patients."
Activities included are divided into several types:
(1) Recall of specific details:
*Focus on characterization and setting
(2) Going beyond the text:
*Answer “why?” and other inference questions
(3) Reading skills:
*Vocabulary in context
*Using illustrations to acquire meaning
(4) Writing and language production skills
