According to Eric Jensen, working memory is the number one predictor of a child's learning success. Working memory training can accelerate a student’s learning at a rate of 1.5 to 2.5 years growth in one school year! We must keep in mind that the brain has the capacity to change. To change the brain, skills must be presented with increasing challenge.
Brain Blasters is designed to provide important skill practice while also giving your learners the experiences they need to improve their working memory. This activity is designed so that every learner can be successful while practicing spelling cvc words as well as their visual memory skills.
To present the pictures electronically, project on smartboard, or save in iBooks on iPad. You can also print the pages if needed.
PREP: Print a student response sheet for each student in your group. Place them in dry erase pockets. (Or, for NO PREP option, use dry erase boards and have students draw a vertical and horizontal line to create their response grip for each set.)
Read the student directions to your learners. Follow the teacher directions. Watch to see which students are successful with each word so that when you call on students to write on the board, you are allowing for success. Allow students to “fix” their answers to earn their blasts.
Have fun! (Kids LOVE this!!)
