Are you looking for a new way to engage your students in critical thinking
during math? Are you struggling with finding meaningful activities
for math rotations?
This resource is just what you need!
The Working on Word Problems resource promotes the development of questions, creative writing, critical thinking, solving and collaboration (if you choose)!
This resource was designed to utilize the 33 detailed pictures (included) and the task cards to mathematically think critically, with or without collaborating.
Each week you will select one of the 33 pictures to be your picture of the week. Then, you will decide how you will want to organize the resource for you students. You could pre-select the task for each of the 5 days, changing it each morning. You could select a few tasks and hang them on a ring or in an envelope on your display board and the students can work on those tasks throughout the week. You could also just pick 2-3 tasks for your students to accomplish in a week. These resources are very flexible and easy to pull from to prepare for students.
The general task cards provide many choices for activities for students to complete on the recording sheet provided or in a notebook. There are 16 general task cards included that can be used with any of the 33 pictures. In addition to the general task cards that could be used with any picture, there are two specific task cards for each picture.
These are called –
Can You Fix It? First, students must read and comprehend the word problem. Next, students must read through the incorrect solution and determine why that solution is wrong. Last, students will solve the problem correctly and explain their correct solution compared to the incorrect solution.
Can You Solve It?
The word problem used on each Can You Fix It? card, is also provided on a Can You Solve It? card. You may find that analyzing an already solved problem might be too difficult for some or all of your students. Choose the format that works for you!
