This lesson has real life application; it requires students to use math skills but also encourages imagination, creativity, and self reflection. Students imagine that they are 16 and getting their first car; they complete a DMV form accurately, choose an example of a California Special Interest License Plate that they could qualify to buy, and create that license plate using a configuration of letters and numbers that reflects some aspect of themselves. Students from 6th through 10th grade love this activity. Local DMV's want to display them. Great beginning of the year activity.
