Need a way to assess your student’s ability to apply knowledge of long and short vowel sounds in words? My set of long and short vowel words worksheets provide an easy way to check for understanding of these vowel phonemes.
On each sheet, the students will write a long or short vowel word to label the picture. Answer sheets are included (so you will know what words match the pictures).
I use these worksheets to check for understanding of long vowel chunks and short vowel chunks. For long vowel words, I accept any long vowel phoneme that matches the sound (i.e. if the word is cake, I also accept caik) as I want to know who hears the difference and understands that most long vowels do not stand alone and short vowels do. However, your expectations for spelling will depend on your grade level and the lessons you have taught.
My students have worked with both the long and short vowel chunks and practiced them with my long and short vowel flip books before I use these worksheets. You can check out the flip books here.
This file includes 6 printable worksheets, one worksheet without pictures (students draw their own) and one blank master that you can customize.
