This download contains a fantastic printable map, presentation, set of readings, and hands-on building project for the major world empires at 1500.

The map covers two notebook pages and is designed to be used with the PowerPoint (or included Google Slides presentation) notes so students can color in the major empires and fill in the boxes with essential information about each based on our state standards. The presentation includes notes on each of the following:

  • The Inca
  • The Aztecs
  • Europe (England, France, & Russia)
  • The Songhai
  • Mughal Empire
  • Medieval Japan
  • Ming China
  • The Ottoman Empire

Also included is a one page info sheet on each empire and one of its most famous architectural achievements (the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu, Great Wall, etc). This is is an excellent group activity in which students build a mini-version of each monument using straws, tape, and paper. Directions and a rubric for this project are included. This hands-on activity helps students to engage with these empires and create amazing works of art! It's also great for team-building.

A Google Doc version of the project and readings is also included with the download. A lesson plan details how to use each resource and includes links to the Google materials.

This is a wonderful lesson that will truly reach all learners in your classroom.
