Problem based learning projects are wonderful engaging learning tools for GATE and Advanced learners, but can also be utilized in the mainstream classroom. This PBL project focuses on World catastrophic events. I am currently working through one with my class on the Japanese tsunami debris problem hitting Hawaii and the Pacific coast of the U.S.
Through this PBL process, the students will explore a catastrophic event, identify possible problems related to the event, select one problem to solve, formulate possible solutions to the problem, evaluate the solutions, then develop one solution. After writing a solution proposal, the students will create a slideshow to present the information that they have found. This project is rich in Internet-based research and computer skills.
World Event: Problem Based Learning Project meets CCSS standards in Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening.
