DBQ: Ancient India

This 45-60 minute lesson plan is appropriate for teachers or to use as emergency sub plans. Brief short readings are included in the packet for students to analyze and complete a final activity about Ancient India.

Students will be required to read and analyze each document. They will show their understanding by answering a series of questions related to the documents that they read.

Historical Context: Ancient Indian civilization is recognized as one of the most important ancient world civilizations due to the many contributions they made to the world we see today. During this time city-states were created like most ancient civilizations near a river. They used the Indus River to eventually invade other places as a means of growing their territorial power. Some of the most common things associated with ancient India is the Caste System, Sanskrit, Hinduism, and Buddhism.

In this lesson, the students will read four documents that will help build their background knowledge about ancient India. They will then use your critical thinking skills to answer various open-ended questions that will require them to apply information from these documents to support their answer responses to each question.

At the end of the lesson, students will be asked to:

• Describe the Caste System and what affect it had on different aspects of daily life in Ancient India.
• State and Explain your stance on the Caste System. Are you for? Or Against? Use information from the documents to support your responses.
• Discuss pros or cons related to your stance about the Caste System.
• If given the opportunity to create your own system, what are three things you would like to implement that you believe would make people live happier lives.
