DBQ: The Renaissance

This 45-60 minute lesson plan is appropriate for teachers or to use as emergency sub plans. Brief short readings are included in the packet for students to analyze and complete a final activity about life during the Renaissance period.

Everything is included for this lesson (readings, instructions, rubric).

Students will be required to read and analyze each document. They will show their understanding by answering a series of questions related to the documents that they read.

Historical Context: The Renaissance period lasted from 14th to the 17th century in Europe. Many historians know the renaissance period as being the time between the Middle-Ages (dark ages) and modern times. The middle ages are also called the dark ages due to the many losses in advancements to civilization made by the Greek and Romans. Historians used renaissance (rebirth) to describe the period after the dark ages ended. This was when Europe began to prosper again. People once again learned education, science, art, literature, music, and other things that made life easier for everyone. One important thing to note is there were rebirths happening all over Europe during this time. Historians will usually separate the Renaissance period based on areas they took place in.

In this lesson, the students will read five documents that will help build their background knowledge about the Renaissance. They will then use your critical thinking skills to answer various open-ended questions that will require them to apply information from these documents to support their answer responses to each question.

At the end of this lesson, the students are expected to:

• Discuss what the Renaissance period was.
• Describe what daily life was like during the Renaissance period.
• List and describe 4 or more inventions made during the Renaissance period.
• Explain why the Renaissance period was successful?
• Describe the impact the Renaissance period had on today’s society?
• Explain specifically how the Renaissance period has impacted lives.
