10 Multiple choice
Using a cumulative test is a standard method of assessing the learner’s overall understanding of the material presented throughout the unit through a variety of methods.
Multiple choice questions cover a wide range of the key things in the unit in minimal time. Providing the option of choice to the student can either jog the memory (for those with good understanding) or confuse (for those with little understanding).
Identifying key terms is essential in understanding the level of understanding of the material. While defining the term provides general knowledge, its application to broader concepts and historical significance demonstrates deeper thinking through analysis. An essay enables the teacher to examine the depth of knowledge as the student is asked not only to convey factual knowledge but to apply it to larger concepts, using critical analysis and historical interpretation. The essay is also a good tool to use as an indicator of argumentative factors and providing an unbiased presentation in clear written essay format.
Both the multiple choice and the key terms section addresses key Canadian figures and events prominent during the interwar years. The essay question is indicative of student understanding of major changes in Canada since 1914 due to events of WWII, with the expectation that the student understands the effects and shifting political trends.
