I like my world walls to link words to bigger ideas through color. In this case, I used five big ideas of world history and brainstormed a list of words that were big ideas of each theme. This is not a complete list by any means. I did leave some important words off because of other needs in my class, but I figured that would allow for a discussion as well. At the end of the year students can create their own top 10 lists under each category, or you can create one as a class. Poster was created to print 24 x 36. I use my own hand cut "A" and "BIG" with a clipart picture of a globe to create the title "A GREAT BIG WORLD." The word "GREAT" is the only word of those included in the poster along with the themes and list of words. The themes are divided into government, religion, economy, art/architecture, and technology. Some words will fit in multiple categories, which allows for another discussion or activity. I did find a list of the top 50 Greatest Breakthroughs in technology and added telegraph from the list because I liked the tag and I was surprised to find many of my own on the list (including alphabet).
Again, this does not include the words "A" and "Big World."
You will receive a pdf version to print off your own poster. It can be resized to a smaller version than 24x36.
