This 12-lesson world music unit was designed to provide general music teachers with a series of lessons that can be used to introduce children to a new, diverse type of music. The music of Benin, a beautiful West African nation, has rarely been explored within the world of music education. This unit was originally designed for grades 4-6, but the lessons could easily be adapted for many other grade levels. Each lesson is very detailed, and the activities are learner-centered and engaging. Additionally, each lesson includes cultural and contextual connections and world music pedagogy "hints".
A wide variety of supplemental materials are provided, including a Benin slideshow, PowerPoint presentation, Nearpod presentation, written notation, and video/audio examples. You can access these materials through a convenient link to a Dropbox folder. Additionally, a variety of assessment materials are provided. All lessons are explicitly tied to the new National Core Music Standards and will participate in learning experiences related to Creating, Performing, Responding, and Connecting.
