World News Crossword for the week ending October 25th, 2015 is a crossword based on last week's world news events. It's a simple PDF that can be downloaded and printed very quickly.
The puzzle can be used as an individual or small-group activity by middle and high school students. I think it works best when 2-4 students work together, competing against other groups (because kids can't help being competitive). Apple and Samsung are spending bazillions of dollars convincing the kids to use smartphones and so I suggest teachers embrace that, and let the students use their phones to explore last week's news events.
Copy some of the puzzles and have them in your bag for when you have to substitute for a sick colleague.
Let the kids chat about the clues and what they think about the news stories. The giant tortoise in the Galapagos Islands, the cycling refugees crossing into Norway, Stormy Patricia, the Hungarian TV camera operator who is suing Facebook, and the whole Canadian town that's celebrating Christmas early. A lot happened in our world last week.
This week there's a bonus puzzle. It's made from the same news items but with the clues and answers rearranged. Use it later in the week or even next week to see what the kids remember.
Don't forget to come back next Sunday evening or Monday morning for next week's World News Crossword.
