This activity has students viewing newspapers and listening to songs from 1914. It provides students with a better understanding of how people reacted to the war.
Activity One: Newspaper Analysis
- Newspapers are not included in the zipped file (copyright issues), but students can access newspaper archives from the New York Times (free), Toronto Star ($3.95 per hour), Daily Mirror (paid) or others. Another option is that the teacher creates pdf.'s of the newspapers and makes them available to the students - this is what works best for me.
- Students view the newspapers in pairs and look for key headlines or phrases in an article to match one of the tasks.
Activity Two: Songs of 1914
- Within the zipped file are 6 British songs from 1914 (original songs - copyright expired). The teacher plays the songs and the students complete an analysis box for four of the songs.
- These songs express a type of unreal optimism for war - very interesting to see the reaction from students.
This activity works in conjunction with my other World War One student activities. Check out my TPT page for further information.
