Students read an account from WWI on the first use of the battlefield tank by the British, answer 12 questions, and respond to some creative questions about improving the tank, recounting a different "first time use" of military technology, and imagining what sort of advancements we will see in the coming 100 years. This would be great for a sub and the answers are included where appropriate.
Sample questions include:
--Why was an invention such as the tank necessary during WWI?
--In what ways was the tank a success and a failure?
--What was to be one of the highlights of the war?
--Inferring from the text, was Bert British or German and why is that your answer?
--In 4 sentences or less, summarize what "the surprise in store" was for Bert and his comrades.
--What is your reaction to "and made themselves some tea. The battle was over as far as they were concerned." Could something like that happen in a battle today? Why or why not?
