This is a formative assessment that I give students before they start the unit to see what vocabulary they already know. After they have told me what they know, I then give each student a 'individual vocabulary list'. This makes students buy into the study of vocabulary because students who already know words are not having to write definitions and create things with these words. They only have to do the work id it is a word the genuinely don't know! This makes the learning of vocabulary completely individualized.
