Product Description

The goal of this lesson is to have students understand the impact of alliances and imperialism on turning a local conflict into the First World War.  At the end of the lesson all students should be able to explain that alliances were confusing and complex. They should note that a conflict between Serbia and Austria-Hungary grew more complicated as Russia, Germany, France, Great Britain and the Ottoman Empire joined to support their allies.  Additionally, some students will be able to understand the more complex concept of imperialism; how it impacted even more nations, that would have otherwise had nothing to do with a European conflict. These smaller nations were controlled or influenced by world powers, and as a result the war became a conflict involving nations from 6 continents.  This information will be applicable to the students’ challenge project where they will be addressing the role American territories played during World War I.
