The Battle of Cambrai was a British offensive and German counter-offensive battle in World War I. Cambrai, was a key supply point for the German Siegfried Stellung and capture of the town and the nearby Bourlon Ridge would threaten the rear of the German line.
Major General Hugh Tudor, Commander Royal Artillery of the 9th Division, suggested trying out new artillery-infantry techniques on his sector of the front. J. F. C. Fuller, a staff officer with the Royal Tank Corps, was looking for a place to use tanks as raiding parties. General Julian Byng, commander of the British Third Army, decided to incorporate them into the attack.
The Battle of Cambrai, marked the first large-scale use of tanks for a military offensive. Led by General Julian Byng, a British force of 9 infantry divisions, 5 cavalry divisions, and 3 tanks brigades sprung a surprise attack near Cambrai, France, on November 20. The battle decisively demonstrated the power of tanks and altered the course of future warfare.
