This unit is designed to ensure that each day's learning targets are aligned to the essential question and to the unit quiz. Clearly defined success criteria provide the instructor simple formative assessment for monitoring the day's learning
In my district, we are asked to write the daily learning target on the board each day and to list success criteria where the students can assess if they have met the planned learning activity successfully. Since we use Cornell Notes, I ask students to list the daily learning target in the heading of their notes and then start their notes with the success criteria. I then follow the planned lesson activities and in the last 4-5 minutes of class, I ask students to reflect in their summary on each of the success criteria. I can then come by and read what students have written and/or have them share at the start of the next class their summaries. This provides me some easily accessible formative assessment on each day’s learning activity.
I have provided three extended activities and an end of unit quiz that is directly tied to each day’s success criteria. If students have been able to successfully summarize their success criteria, they should have no problem with the quiz.
