Writing prompts are an engaging way to review the major concepts, ideas, and vocabulary terms related to the difficult subject of World War I. Major themes include: Central and Allied Powers, German Aggression (u-boats & zeppelins), the Sinking of the Lusitania, Treaty of Versailles, League of Nations, Fourteen Points, Woodrow Wilson, America's Involvement in the War, and more! The writing prompt activity can also be completed in a center or as a whole group introduction/conclusion to the day's lesson. Correlates with GA fifth grade GSE standards but generic for any state and most grades!
Each of the 14 writing prompt covers one specific element and is taken directly from the GSE portions of social studies standards in Georgia. At the end, there are two blank pages for writers who may need additional space and a rubric for grading! Can be useful for anyone teaching WWII, not just GA teachers!
Geared toward GA Fifth Grade Social Studies standards, but NOT specific:
SS5H2 Describe U.S. involvement in World War I and post-World War I America.
a. Explain how German attacks on U.S. shipping during the war in Europe (1914-1917) ultimately led the U.S. to join the fight against Germany; include the sinking of the Lusitania and concerns over safety of U.S. ships, U.S. contributions to the war, and the impact of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.
I hope that you enjoy this product as much as I have in my own classroom. With all of the standards that we must teach, I have a difficult time fitting in daily writing. This product is the solution to that problem and is an easy, “print-and-go” way to integrate social studies into writing instruction or vice versa. I sincerely hope that this product will make your life as a social studies teacher easier, while helping your students to think more critically about history and the important events that have shaped our nation’s history.
