World War II Sequencing Activity

Are you looking for an engaging way to review for your World War II test? Try this lesson! This is an activity to review the events leading to World War II. It is perfect for a formative assessment or a review activity prior to a state test. Your ELL learners will benefit from activities such as this from the visuals and discussion opportunities created.

In this activity, students will create summaries of the different events leading to World War II. A graphic organizer is provided to assist your students. Once their summaries are created, they will create a Human Timeline by posting their placard (slide from the PowerPoint) and sharing their summary with the class. All of the images from the placards help serve as a visual cue for your students. Once you have reviewed the events in chronological order, you can lead a class discussion by creating a Human Spectrum. – Which of these events was the most important leading to World War II? The least? This allows your student to discuss and review the topics in a meaningful way.

This activity includes:
placards with the events leading to World War II – 10 different beautiful images to sort and discuss (see the preview for all of the placards)
a graphic organizer – a “fishbone” graphic organizer for student’s summaries
Human Spectrum signs – Most to Least Important, and
teacher directions – for your pleasure!

Holocaust

Learn about the Holocaust through quotes, images and primary source newspaper articles.

Holocaust - In this activity, students will learn about the Holocaust and genocide as they visit four different stations in a museum-like experience. At each station, your students will be exposed to primary source images, quotations, maps and readings as they learn about the Holocaust.

The activity begins with a provocative quote and question - Could the Holocaust happen again? The presentation will guide your students through a brief timeline and directions for completing the activity. As your students travel through the Holocaust Museum they will create diary entries as eye-witness accounts to the Holocaust. The activity concludes with a higher level analysis - which of these quotes describes the Holocaust?

You will receive:
A handout with specific teacher directions - how to set up your room, direct your students, etc.

A Diary Graphic Organizer - you can run this off back to back or staple it together to make a mini-book

Presentation with student directions - This is a PDF you can use to give your students specific directions for each station

Signs for the different stations: The Ghettos, Concentration Camps, The Resistance and Other Genocides - I would run these off on different colored paper to make them really pop!

Placards with primary source images, quotes and maps - just like in a real museum! Students have the opportunity to look at "artifacts".

Readings for each of the four topics - these are short "chunked" reading selections or key quotes to help your students understand each topic

This is an ideal activity to preview the Holocaust if you teach The Diary of Anne Frank.

This activity contains graphic images - not intended for a younger audience. You can modify the activity to remove some of the images if you are using it with your younger students.

World War II Odd One Out

This is an activity to promote higher level thinking during reviews. In the "Odd One Out" students are given primary source images from which they have to analyze and develop patterns. Once they have detected the pattern, they have to identify which image is the "Odd One Out" - doesn't fit the pattern. Students are then required to write justification statements on their answer.

This activity can be used as an anchor station or for whole group discussion. The class discussion will benefit your ELL students.

The images are from the public domain.
