Most citizens of the United States did not want to become involved in World War II. They considered it a “European” problem for those in Europe to resolve. All that changed on December 7, 1941 when Japan attacked the United States military base at Pearl Harbor. President Roosevelt asked congress and was granted a declaration of war against of Japan. Within a month, Adolph Hitler declared war on the United States, the United States was thrust fully into World War II, fighting on two fronts.
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill had on numerous occasions appealed to President Franklin Roosevelt to join the Allied cause. The and two had met on several occasions to discuss the United States possible involvement, how such a war would be executed and even what a post war would look like following such a war.
