“There is thrashing in the water. Then you hear a blood-curdling scream. Then it’s blood, blood, blood, shark, shark, shark.”
This gripping NO PREP reading passage and response question worksheet will bring the tragedy of the USS Indianapolis to life for you students. The passage summarizes key information about the attack, sinking, and subsequent ordeal - thirst, hypothermia, salt-water poisoning, drowning, and shark attacks - faced by the crew. As students read, they discover that days before the attack, the Indianapolis successfully delivered the major component used in the first atomic bomb, which creates even more appreciation for the sacrifices made by the crew. After reading the passage, students complete the response worksheet which contains a mix of multiple choice and short answer questions.
