Do you need an activity that analyzes the United States victory over Japan? We've got the activity for you!
This "World War II: Victory in the Pacific " Activity includes:
1) A set of questions that test your students knowledge of what happened following the war in the Pacific. Topics range from the Japanese surrender, the Nuremberg Trials, and the formation of the United Nations. This will get your students minds ready for the next portion of the activity, analyzing first hand accounts from different Americans regarding the atomic bomb. Students will read these primary sources and answer questions that help them synthesize the information. Students will be able to step into the shoes of the people of which dropping the bomb would impact including: an American GI, a Japanese civilian, Albert Einstein and Joseph Stalin. Finally, your students will write a series of "Yeah Buts" regarding dropping the bomb. This will give them the opportunity to look at both sides of the issue no matter how they feel about it. This activity is different from many other activities because it takes into account the views of many different people and the way it would impact all of them.
This activity can be used in many different ways in the classroom. Students can work independently, in pairs or this activity can be used as a jigsaw in order to facilitate a class wide discussion about the topics discussed in the activity.
2) A detailed answer key to the lesson activity to save you time and help guide student comprehension.
