World War One -The July Crisis- Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- This is a 12 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 34 questions based on a Crash Course world history video and the website: First World War.com.
Students will begin this assignment by watching the Crash Course world history video: HOW World War I Started. The video will introduce the time period and go over the key themes and events of the time. The video will go over the July Crisis, starting with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and then work its way through the diplomatic failures during July 1914. The German guarantee of support for Austria (the blank cheque), Russia's support for Serbia, the Black Hand, and the alliance system are all covered. The entry of Britain into the war due to Germany's invasion of Belgium, the eventual entry of other powers into the war, and the role of mobilization are also reviewed. Following the video, student will proceed to the firstworldwar.com website and read an article on the July Crisis. The article will go into more detail about the thought process of the European diplomats of the time, review the importance of the alliance system, and share how the general European population responded to the outbreak of war.
