World War One- Trench Warfare Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- This is a 14 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 35 questions based on a First World War tutorial video and the website: firstworldwar.com.
Students will begin this assignment by watching the First World War tutorial video: Hard and Muddy Times: THE TRENCH WARFARE. The video will introduce the time period and go over the key themes and events of the time. The video will review the establishment of the trenches in the fall of 1914 in the Race to the Sea. Following that the video will go over many aspects of trench life and trench warfare. The construction of a trench and the various trenches that existed are covered as is the dangers of no man's land. The constant danger and large periods of boredom the soldiers experienced is also reviewed. The daily schedule of the soldiers, the job of a runner, trench foot, and the horrifying smell of the trenches are also discussed. Following the video, students will proceed to the website firstworldwar.com and read an article which also includes embedded videos. The article will review many of the points from the video and also discuss the prevalence of disease, rats, and lice in the trenches. The food soldiers were served in the trenches is also covered in both the video and article.
