Description
***ASCA Standards/Learning Targets Page is included in the beginning of this lesson***
This curriculum contains 8 engaging lessons, to teach students how to manage worry and anxiety in a classroom, small group or individual counseling setting.
Also included is a "Worry No More" Cheatsheet!
The first four lessons are comprehensive and could take a 45-60 minute class period, the last four are quick, simple strategies that could be used at the beginning or end of class, prior to a transition.
All of these strategies can also be used successfully by adults!
Lessons include:
- Sunny vs. Cloudy Thinking: This is a hands-on, engaging lesson geared towards elementary school-aged students and will help them use positive affirmations as opposed to negative self-talk when facing challenges.
- ANT Squashing: This lesson is geared towards upper elementary/middle school-aged students in which they identify Automatic Negative Thoughts and replace them with more productive thoughts. This lesson includes 3 activities and involves a bit of competition in which students quite literally swat at ANTS using fly swatters. There is also a partner "memory" game included as one of the activities.
- Change the Channel: This is a strategy that could be used at any age level to help students quickly shift their thoughts from worried to calm using a created or imaginary remote control. In this lesson students will be identifying things that cause them worry as well as calming thoughts.
- 5 Senses: This activity can be used at any age level. This lesson will help students learn how to stay mindful and present in any situation simply by using their 5 senses. This activity includes a simple worksheet that guides students to find 5 things they see, 4 things they hear, 3 things they feel, 2 things they smell and 1 thing they taste.
- Figure 8 Breathing & Flower/Candle Breathing: This activity can be used at any age level. This is a simple, quick transition lesson that will teach students a strategy to remember to breathe to calm their bodies down. This activity only takes 1-5 minutes and could be used daily or more than once a day.
- Yoga Poses: This activity can be used at any age level. This lesson will teach students a variety of yoga poses in a way that engages them and keeps their attention. Yoga Poses are NOT included in this lesson. This activity is best used in conjunction with pre-printed yoga cards or following a yoga video with simple poses. This is an activity that encourages movement and creativity.
- Tense/Relax: This activity can be used at any age level. This is a quick, simple 1-5 minute transition lesson that will teach students a strategy to release tension in their muscles. This could be used daily or more than once a day.
- In the Moment: This activity can be used at any age level. This lesson will teach students how to be mindful in the moment. This is a quick 1-5 minute transition lesson to be used before, after or in between classes.
