Most Americans would like to believe that they would been supportive of the American Revolution if they lived in 1776. However we know that many factors influenced a person's political leanings then and now. The day before I introduce the concepts of Patriots and Loyalists and who they were and what they believed. To avoid thinking about the Patriots and Loyalists in purely hero and villain terms I always introduce my survey the next day with seemingly innocuous questions, students just think they're taking a survey about politics. Then I reveal that this survey reveals how they might have felt about the American Revolution if they were alive at the time. The activity comes complete with separate teacher instructions, the all important survey and even a class or homework assignment featuring critical thinking questions that get them to examine the issues personally.
