Before reading Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes have a large red heart cut out. Ask students what they notice about it (smooth). As you read, every time someone says something to make Chrysanthemum feel sad, wrinkle the heart. continue this until it's a ball of paper. As the characters start to say nice things about Chrysanthemum begin to smooth the heart. By the end of the book the heart will be as smooth as possible. Ask the students what they notice about the heart now (still wrinkled).
Glue the white heart with the saying in the middle. Have students write their names and color in their band-aids to help heal Chrysanthemum's heart.
