"I don't know what to write." "I'm thinking..." We've all heard our students say these phrases when we have them write sentences with their words of the week.
These cards are formatted to fit 2x4 shipping labels. Print them out, stick them on colored index cards, and laminate them for extended use. In the classroom, I put them in a box. One member of a group draws one, reads it to the group, and each member of the group writes a different sentence that follows the prompt. Each member of the group may also choose their own word of the week to use.
For an extra challenge, I have the students get creative with the prompts and add details. For example, if you draw the card that says, "Use one of your words in a sentence with the president," then you might use the word "president" or you might mention a president by name instead! Likewise, the discussion that results from having so many sentences on the same topic, yet using different words- is invaluable to English Language Learners and students reading below grade level.
