Description

This project can be used with any poem. Students will analyze a poem to identify select poetic devices. Then they will choose several of those elements to use in writing their own poem.

Imitating literary elements from a model text is a way to practice analyzing and implementing those devices. It can force students to work with elements they wouldn’t normally pick, or even make them actively consider the literary devices they are using.

In the premade poetry analysis, students will analyze a poem to identify mood, style, line length, stanza organization, rhyme, meter, and theme. There is also a blank analysis worksheet that can be used for teacher or student-selected terms.

Contents:
Overview
Student instruction sheet with rubric
Poetry analysis worksheet—preprinted terms and blank terms
