Do you want to combine writing, science, and technology with a craft? If so, this may be the pack for you. This craftivity is a PebbleGo research project about animals in their natural habitats.

NOTE: PebbleGo is NOT A MUST for this research project. PebbleGo is a great online resource, however, it requires a subscription. Our school buys a subscription each year.

The zoo is a great place to see animals from all over the world. However, where did they live before that?

Our 21st Century students are familiar with apps these days, so they would enjoy writing their own app. When this craftivity is complete, they will be able to say, "I can write an app for that!"

I have included lesson suggestions for research, information about PebbleGo, instructions for putting together the craftivity, and other ideas for using and extending this project.

Please see the preview and thumbnails to see all that is included.

This pack includes Part One of the Animal Sets.

Set One includes the following animals that normally live in the wild, but can also be found in the zoo:

cheetah

elephant

flamingo

giraffe

gorilla

hippopotamus

kangaroo

koala bear

monkey

penguin

tiger

walrus

Set Two will include 14 more animals. (Coming Soon)

The included animal clipart “photos” are easy and quick for the students to color and cut due to the straight-edged frames. Since this is a craft, I did not include color versions of these animals.

If you decide to use PebbleGo with this resource, then you will notice that the craftivity is designed to match the set-up of the PebbleGo database. Each section of the organizer matches one of the informational tabs for each animal in PebbleGo. (I have also included information about PebbleGo.) If you haven't tried PebbleGo yet, you and your students will love it!

If you decide not to use PebbleGo for this resource, then you will notice that each section of the booklet corresponds with the information that your students will most likely discover. For example, there are sections for how the animals look, where they live, what they eat, and fun facts.

This craftivity is suitable for 1st-3rd grades, but could be adapted for Kindergarten. It also could be used for 4th graders who are below grade level, but could use a high-interest writing and research project.

It certainly gives all of the students a sense of accomplishment and confidence in what information they can find and learn through a great online resource, PebbleGo.
