Teach this fun lesson in conjunction with any Shakespeare study including plays or sonnets. Students will use adaptations of modern pop songs to understand sonnet structure, clearly identify the rhythm of iambic pentameter, and develop an appreciation for just how amazing Shakespeare was at his craft.
This lesson includes a simple introductory PPT to use with the handouts, handouts that include descriptions and illustrations of rhyme scheme, meaning, and rhythm of a sonnet, a fun activity that demonstrates six popular songs reimagined as Shakespearean Sonnets, and a template and instructions for students to use to write their own sonnet. Most documents are fully editable.
Please note: this lesson contains information on Shakespearean Sonnets but is not designed as explicit instruction on sonnets. It WILL reinforce their knowledge of sonnets and increase their appreciation of the poetic form.
