Young detectives will enjoy carrying official looking clipboards and hunting for the eight farm animals within shape pictures hidden throughout the room.
To show off their discoveries, students will identify each animal on the recording sheet and draw the appropriate shape around that animal. Eavesdrop as your detectives confer with each other about what shapes they have found and have yet to find. This will tell you who is and isn't applying the correct shape names to the shapes they are seeing. For further assessment, ask each detective at the end of the activity to tell you the name of the shape they saw around each animal.
Tip: For optimal durability and aesthetic appeal, print out the shape cards using colored printer ink on card stock. Laminate and cut carefully around the outer lines. Adjust settings such as scale and "fit to page" to increase or decrease the size of the cards. To save on paper, you may also want to laminate each recording sheet and have students write with fine-point dry erase markers.
