Writers' Block Descriptive Language and Mentor Text Lesson Plan

Writers' Block Descriptive Language and Mentor Text Lesson Plan
Product Description
The Writers' Block lesson plan is a beginning-of-the-year, cross-curricular literacy and visual art activity intended for 4th- and 5th-grade classrooms. Students read and analyze descriptive excerpts from mentor texts and use author-provided descriptions of a variety of literary homes (e.g., Zuckerman's barn in "Charlotte's Web") in order to create their own version of these homes on paper. The unit concludes with a walk-around and an introduction to evaluating and offering constructive criticism on classmates' work. Content includes an overview of the project; a sample script; discussion and walk-around suggestions; student handouts, including five brief mentor text excerpts; and a grading rubric.
