Many students come with a vast range of writing skills at the beginning of the school year. Some of these basic common knowledge skills are retained but some seem to dissipate. it is difficult to build on a foundation of skills that are not supported or sketchy.
Re-teaching the skill is always a good idea, however, for the student to maintain the skill and be able to recall the skill, they need to practice often and have a way to check for the accuracy of their work.
This book demonstrates a successful strategy used to assist students in recalling and self monitoring the quality of their writing. The basic writing tools that every child should know by the end of 5th Grade is taught using short direct mini lessons, which also incorporate examples and practice. The students learn a 10 digit number; with each digit directly connecting to the number of "writing rules" they should know.
At the end of the book, the students will know a 'phone number' that serves as a helpline for their Writers Checklist.
