CUTE, COLORED WRITER'S DICTIONARY PRINTOUT!
I use student dictionaries to keep writers writing. (I used it for up to 8th grade....struggling students do well with it, too!) When students grades 1-4, in particular, do not know how to spell a word, often everything stops. By having these available during journaling or any writing, students keep writing. It is a tool used to promote the writing process, creative writing, and spelling.
Easy Set Up: 1) Punch holes; 2) insert in folders with binder; 3) Label each folder with students' names (ie "Ashley's Dictionary")
Sample Directions for use: You are going to be given a very special tool to help you with your writing. Anytime we are doing any writing and you need a word spelled, just 1) open your dictionary to the letter that the word starts with; 2) check and make sure you don't already have that word written down from before; 3) raise your hand; 4) when I come to your workspace, say the word that you need spelled. If you don't have your dictionary on the correct letter, I will walk away. Have your dictionary ready on the the correct letter when I come over. At the front of your dictionary there are word families for easy reference.
