Thank you for checking out my Informative Writing Unit for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades! This unit was inspired by Lucy Calkins and developed over time teaching it in my first grade classroom.
This unit includes lesson plans for teaching informative writing as a whole-group (writing a class book), as well as lesson plans for teaching informative writing as students develop, research, and write their own informative writing book.
These lessons help students with the following skills:
-Organizing information into different categories
-Utilizing non-fiction text features both in reading and writing
-Writing facts and information
-Writing information/facts into different formats (how-to, different-kinds, and draw-and---label pages)
-Reading facts, and writing them in their own words
-Revising and editing
There are 10 lessons in the first whole-group book part, and 15 in the second individual project portion. If teaching both, it will likely take about 1.5 - 2 months; if teaching one, it will likely take about a month.
This unit also includes a rubric for use in pre- and post-assessment.
