Thank you for checking out my Informative Writing Unit! In this unit, students will first work on an informative book about bears as a whole class; students will research and write facts about bears and transfer this information (as a group) into their own words. After this, the unit takes you through how to lead students into independent projects in which they research an animal or topic of interest, and write their own informative writing book.
This unit can also be used with second and third grade.
These narrative lessons help students with the following skills:
-Organizing information into different categories
-Inferring facts based on pictures
-Researching pictures, books, magazines, and multimedia to discover and learn facts
-Reading facts, and then writing them in their own words
-Transferring information from research charts and notebooks into a book format
-Utilizing non-fiction text features both in reading and writing
-Writing a draft prior to publishing a book
There are 26 lesson plans included; for me the unit took about 2 months to complete. The lessons allow for flexibility in timing with your students' ability levels.
