Description
Thank you so much for checking out Writer’s Workshop: Persuasive Writing! I used this in my first grade classroom and taught it in the Spring when most students had a firm understanding of conventions of writing and how to successfully participate in a Writer’s Workshop.
Many of the lessons are aligned with Earth Day and have an environmental theme. You can change this to meet whatever comes during this particular time in your curriculum, or to whatever you think your students may have an interest.
This unit includes several writing activities to build students' knowledge and understanding of persuasive writing prior to individual persuasive books. These activities include:
-Book reviews
-List poems
-Persuasive letters
-Writing activities (and one craftivity) based on books (Hey, Little Ant; The Great Kapok Tree)
Following these activities, students work toward developing their own persuasive book on a topic of choice.
These lessons help students with the following skills:
-Discerning the difference between fact and opinion
-Organizing information
-Developing supporting sentences using evidence and reasoning
-Determining evidence to support the main idea
-Using facts to support opinions
There are 18 lessons included, although it will likely take you more days to teach completely. A pre- and post-assessment is also included in this pack. I believe this unit is best served with students in first, second, and third grades.
