Get your students to do some metacognitive work about their own writing progress! Whether you are doing full-blown writer's workshop or assigning your students a research paper, this quick form allows you to really see where your students are in the process.
I assigned this as a quick check in, and after I collected them, I organized them based on the students' answers to the first question. I conferenced with them in those groups (the ones who "had no idea" to the ones who felt they were "done") and helped them think about their individual next steps should be. The first time I used this, my students had such great conversations with me and each other about their writing that I knew I had to keep this as a regular exercise!
