The Write Stuff

Writers Workshop:Hooked On Writing is a year long comprehensive writing program designed to hook your young writers into not only loving the craft of writing but learning important skills that will help them to express their ideas and communicate effectively.

Many teachers have told me they just don't know where to start when teaching writing. It can surely be overwhelming! I decided to put together a writing program with strategies and skill sets that I have used, developed and improved upon for many years. Accompanied by highly engaging and effective children's literature, you will have 5 detailed lessons a week that are built upon 4 children's books. (Not included.)

You will find this program to be rigorous, yet engaging to students and interesting to teach. Each unit is very systematic and it builds from one lesson to another so that students fully understand each skill. These units can also be stand alone units as they are very detailed.

Each set is aligned with 2nd and 3rd grade CCSS and the Write Traits but is suitable for most learning outcomes including Canadian (British Columbia and Ontario) ones. (Many 4th grade teachers might find this applicable for their classrooms too with some adaptations.) Each month focuses on a different type of writing like fiction, opinion writing etc. and is matched with a writing trait such as word choice or organization. Because writing is very much rooted in speaking, listening, and reading, all of these skills are in this set. There are writing strategies that involve student collaboration, oral language development, technology, and presentation. I always like to say, "Writing doesn't always involve a pencil."

The first Hooked on Writing set (August or September start) is unique to the set. It is set up a bit differently so that you can easily pre-assess your students and then get on to the business of engaging your writers to enjoy a year of writing. The rest of the sets will build upon each other starting with sentence writing and moving into organization and word choice and then paragraph writing etc.. You can use one set after another or you may choose to use one set to teach a specific skill set. The May/June set includes 2 mentor text sets of lessons and is packed with communication skill lessons and creative ways to present writing. This set has a self assessment and peer assessment aspect included as well.

Here is a visual overview that will guide you through the program so you know what to expect and what skills will be covered.
